Introduction to Sailing
You’ve always wanted to learn to sail;
here’s your chance!
Our introductory program consists of three consecutive Sunday afternoon sessions, and includes both classroom instruction and on-the-water. The boats we will be using are 24-foot Rainbows and 23-foot Sonars — these boats are stable, safe, roomy, and in general great boats on which to learn.
What You’ll Learn:
- Sailing terms and parts of the boat
- How a sailboat works
- Basic sail trim and sail controls
- How to rig the boat for sailing
- How to read the wind
- Changing directions by tacking and jibing
- Essential sailing knots
- Safety basics
- Rules of the road and on-water navigation aids
All students will receive basic sailing instructional materials (pdf). There is no certification associated with this class, though you will receive a US Sailing First Sail certificate of participation after taking this course. It’s a great way to pick up the basics and spend three fun days sailing on the most beautiful lake in the Northeast!
