Board of Managers Meeting: February 2013

Minutes from the Feb. 20, 2013, Y-Knot Board of Managers’ meeting at the Clifton Park YMCA, Clifton Park, NY, are submitted for consideration as follows:

In attendance were Keith Edwards (YMCA Camp Chingachgook liaison), Scott Stewart, Don Miller (Vice President), Dan Kennedy, Rick Irvine (Treasurer), Spencer Raggio and Dan Byrnes (Secretary).

Minutes from the Nov. 10 and Jan. 16 meetings were read and approved.

Keith Edwards announced that this summer, YMCA Camp Chingachgook Director George Painter will be leaving the camp to begin his retirement. He will be staying on hand through the dedication of the new dock June 17.

Keith said that, regarding the new waterfront project, photos are at the Camp Chingachgook Facebook page. Spencer Raggio has linked them in from the Y-Knot web page.

For the dock dedication on Monday, June 17, Keith wants us all to bring as many friends as we can and as many of the disabled sailors that we can, we really need to bring out a big crowd for the dedication.

Keith presented information on the three new Hoyer lifts we need for the new dock. He is looking at a Jenny lift with a 300 lb limit. This may be too light for everyone, Keith said, but we’ll have the heavier lift on the other dock available any time. The builder only constructs the lifts in lots of six, so we may have to wait until a log of back orders come in to the builder. Don Miller says he’s used these lifts up in Toronto at AQVA. Keith says he may know of another customer who will buy 1. He’s going to follow up with the vendor.

In a couple of weeks, Keith will have dates for when volunteers will be needed to finish the dock.
Don said we plan to bring a Martin 16 adapted sail boat down to Albany during the day on Wednesday, May 8, to the Stratton Veterans Administration Hospital, to demonstrate the boat to Team Albany, a group of volunteers who work with Wounded Warriors and other veterans organizations. Team Albany sponsored the Open House that Don and Trish McCluskey attended in December. Don and Trish have again volunteered to make this happen in May.

The Board discussed what we could do with campers from the Double H program. We decided that we should invite them over possibly for the Volunteer Training Day or have staff come sail during one of our regular sailing days so they can get a sense of how the program works and whether it would be a fit.

Don brought up the topic of how to promote the 40th anniversary of the Ti Race, Saturday, June 15. Spencer proposed having the Awards Ceremony at Camp. Keith will follow up with the people running the Ti Race to see if they might be amenable to having the party at the camp Sunday afternoon, June 16.

Don said Mark Carnevale is still recovering from recent surgery. He may not be in a position to help pull a couple of boats to out of town events like he has done in the past. The Board is going to have to recruit someone to fill in especially for the Mobility Cup coming up the last week of August in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Keith says hand out cards went to the printer last week. He’ll have them for us to hand out next meeting.

Keith brought along an inventory list he made of merchandise on hand, and we’re a little short of shirts and hats. Rick is going to come up with a budget to print up more Polo shirts and hats for this summer.

Next meeting will be Tuesday, Mar. 19, at the Clifton Park YMCA.
